One morning, not too long ago, the hubs and I went blueberry picking down the street. It was perfect – the sun was just barely rising, we were alone, and the blueberries were almost as big as your face! Well, not that big but you know what I mean. And the whole time we were picking, the ideas were flowing through my head of what I could do with all of these beautiful blueberries. And we had a lot of blueberries…I mean A LOT of blueberries.
Naturally, we used the first batch of blueberries to make blueberry pancakes and a blueberry-maple syrup (recipe will be coming soon!). But even still, after that, we still had a lot of blueberries left over. And since I just made pancakes and syrup, I wanted to try something a little bit more unconventional, something more out-of-the-box.
For some strange reason, barbecue sauce popped up in my head. I’ve done flavored oils and mustards and such…but a barbecue sauce with blueberries? I had to go online just to see if I was the only crazy one who thought of this.
Turns out, I wasn’t the only one! A special thanks to Carrie from Bakeaholic Mama and David from A Bachelor and His Grill for their inspiring recipes on this idea. I loved their recipes, so I kinda combined them while adding a few twists of my own. Thank you, Carrie and David, for sharing your recipes. I enjoyed looking through your pictures and your blogs!
And as for the blueberry BBQ sauce – this stuff shocked my tastebuds. Shocked them in an amazingly, tantalizingly good way – so much where I wanted to eat this stuff by the spoonful. But it was a little bit too spicy to do that straight on, so I decided against it…grudgingly.
It turned out to be a great success, and I am so pleased with every aspect of this sauce. The color is beautiful, the sauce isn’t too sweet but has that balanced tangy-ness to it. I’m tempted to slather this on almost everything I eat. But, against my own wishes, I put some in the freezer so I wouldn’t eat it all in one day.
So what can you do with blueberry BBQ sauce? That will be my next post. Enjoy!
Blueberry BBQ Sauce
Here’s what you’ll need:
Juice of 1 lemon
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
4 cups of blueberries
2 tsp. grill seasoning
1-2 tbsp. liquid smoke
1 small red onion, diced
Several cloves of garlic, minced
1 tsp. brown sugar
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 tsp. red pepper flakes
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1. In a large skillet, saute garlic and onion in a little bit of oil until soft (10 minutes on medium heat).
2. Add vinegar, ketchup, salt and pepper, red pepper flakes. Mix well to combine then add the blueberries. Bring to a boil then turn down to a gentle boil (medium low heat) for at least a half hour, or until the blueberries have broken down.
3. Take the skillet off heat and let cool. Then, take a slotted spoon and scoop the solids of the sauce into a food processor and blend till smooth. Repeat until all of the sauce is smooth. Put the sauce back in the skillet and bring to a gentle boil.
4. Start adding the rest of the ingredients, taste testing along the way. Once the sauce is heated through, you can either use it immediately or store it up in jars to use for later. I put mine in mason jars and put the extra jars in the freezer (let them cool in the fridge first before doing this).
